The heirs of designer Hergé are embarking on the great adventure of digital art. Two NFTs of Blue Lotus glory will be released soon, marking a new phase in Tintin’s history.

These three letters still cause confusion among the general public: the principle of NFT, for “Non-fungible Token” (literally “non-fungible token”), however, is not complex. It is simply an archive or a digital work, with a certificate of authenticity stamped on the blockchain (a technology for storing and transmitting information on the web). Therefore, NFT itself is not “tangible”, but exists in the virtual universe, and it is precisely this digital world that the company Tintinimaginatio (formerly Moulinsart) that manages the exploitation of d’Hergé’s work chose to explore. During this first quarter of 2023, the Hergéen temple guards will release two NFTs in honor of the famous reporter, the Lotus Bleu version. “Continuing to bring Tintin to life without creating a new album is a real challenge,” explains Yves February, digital manager at Tintinimaginatio. Today, the Louvain-la-Neuve museum is the analogue heart of Tintin’s work. ‘Hergé, but our ambition is to develop a whole digital universe around Tintin, thanks to NFT technology. Informed Tininologists will recall that the digital life of Herge’s hero began several years ago. The first website in 1996, the online store in 2000, social networks from 2009, the first podcast of his adventures in 2017… Tintin knows the world of the Internet well, but his arrival in the world of NFT marks today a turning point in the commercial exploitation of this comic book character. “We can say that 85% of Herge’s work is in Tininimaginatio and that 15% is in circulation in private collections,” continues Yves Juillet. So we can imagine, in the long run, a virtual museum made up of works that we don’t have but are still copyrighted, so with NFTs we can manage those works digitally.” This is precisely the case of the Lotus Bleu cover project, which only a year ago broke the world auction record for comics, with a purchase of close to 3.2 million euros, including costs, at the Artcurial house. The identity of the owner still remains a mystery, but nothing prevents Tininimaginatio from using the work in another version, since the drawing was digitized while still with its publisher Casterman. Today, the work has been revived in a double NFT. The first, presented as a “collective” (sic) , will take the exclusively digital form of this drawing “printed” in 1777 unique copies, numbered and sold for 350 euros each. The second, called “utilitarian”, will make the connection between the real and the virtual, since the format of you will be chosen of the official NFT logo of Hergé’s work, which this time will accompany the 777 numbered copies of a real paper print of this project. for Le Lotus Bleu and whose price will be set between 650 and 750 euros. Combined, these sales of a new genre should bring in more than a million euros for Tininimaginatio.
