Controversial British-American influencer Andrew Tate has been arrested in Romania amid a human trafficking and rape investigation.
The self-proclaimed ‘misogynist’ rose to fame after being booted from the UK version of reality show Big Brother in 2016 following the release of a video which appeared to show him assaulting a woman.
He said at the time that the footage was staged and was “a total lie intended to make me look bad”.
Today, the 36-year-old former kickboxer has over 3.5 million Twitter followers – and a global profile.
Tate – whose full name is Emory Andrew Tate – was born in December 1986 and his website states that he is from Chicago, Illinois.
He is named after his father, an American who worked for the United States Air Force in Britain and who was also a chess master. His mother and father met in the United Kingdom before moving to America, where Tate grew up until his parents divorced.
After the divorce, Tate moved to Luton, England with her mother.
Both Tate and his younger brother Tristan said they experienced poverty in England. In interviews, they recalled going to KFC to save other people’s leftover chicken and freeze it for future meals.
Tate was a four-time world kickboxing champion, but it was on the Internet that he gained worldwide fame.
On TikTok, videos with the hashtag #AndrewTate have been viewed more than 12.7 billion times. This figure also includes videos made by people criticizing the influencer.
What did Andrew Tate say about women?
In an interview with another YouTuber, he said he was “absolutely misogynist” and added: “I’m a realist and when you’re a realist you’re a sexist. There’s no way to be rooted in reality and not be sexist.”
In the same video, he described women as “inherently lazy” and said “there is no such thing as an independent woman”.
Many social media platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, have banned it – the latter claiming that “misogyny is a hateful ideology that will not be tolerated”.
Tate has been banned from Twitter because women should ‘take responsibility’ for being sexually assaulted. He has since been reinstated.
Andrew Tate described himself as a “self-made multi-millionaire” and said he made money from “a little camera business in my apartment”.
“I had 75 women working for me in four locations and I was making $600,000 a month on webcam,” he said in a podcast interview.
In a now-deleted page on his website, he said he brought women into the “adult entertainment industry.”
“My job was to meet a girl, go on a few dates, have sex with her, see if she was good enough, get her to fall in love with me enough to do whatever I said, and then do it. that on the web cam. we can get rich together,” he wrote on the page – which was later removed in February 2022.
Tate works alongside his brother, Tristan, who told the Daily Mirror their business was “a huge scam” that saw men pay to talk to women online.
“I’ve seen men selling cars, TVs… This guy’s grandmother died and they were waiting for the house to sell. When the house sold, he was given £20,000 and promised [un mannequin]to pay for his fake financial problem,” Tristan told the Mirror.
Why was Andrew Tate arrested?
Andrew Tate was arrested along with his brother Tristan in December 2022 in a suburb of Romania’s capital, Bucharest, as part of an investigation into allegations of human trafficking and rape, which they deny.
A spokesman for the Tate told the Daily Mirror they could not give details about the allegations of human trafficking and rape. But he added: “Andrew and Tristan Tate have the utmost respect for the Romanian authorities and will always help and assist in any way possible.”
Tate has appeared in countless videos, flaunting an ultra-luxurious lifestyle of sports cars, private jets and yachts.
Shortly before his arrest in December 2022, he engaged in a debate with environmental activist Greta Thunberg on Twitter.
He claimed to own 33 cars and said he would send him a list of their respective “big shows”.
