Australia now has more cryptocurrency ATMs than El Salvador

The number of cryptocurrency ATMs in Australia has reached new heights over the past four months. Thus, the country overtook El Salvador, where bitcoin (BTC) it is a legal course. In addition, two other countries passed El Salvador, namely Spain and Poland.

According to, the top three countries in terms of number of installed cryptocurrency ATMs are United States, Canada and Spain, with 33,950, 2,649 and 273 gates respectively. The difference in figures between these countries is considerable.

Australia is in fourth place, with 0.6% of the total number of cryptocurrency distributors worldwide. This represents 225 cars. Most of them are in Melbourne (65), Sydney (48) and Brisbane (33).

The continent is then followed by Poland and its 222 locations. The vast majority of machines, 67, are installed in the country’s capital, Warsaw, while Krakow takes second place with 42 vending machines.

El Salvador is currently in 6th place with 212 goals listed cars. Most of the distributors, 28, are located in San Salvador, the capital of the country, followed by 25 distributors in Santa Tecla. Others are spread across the country.

Bitcoin has become the legal standard in El Salvador in September 2021, but this decision was heavily criticized. Since then, skeptics and opponents of cryptocurrency, both at home and abroad, have strongly criticized the decision.

Also in 2021, the government has decided to install about 200 vending machines in order to promote bitcoin adoption. Thus, the country has taken the third place in the world in terms of the number of these machines, after the United States and Canada. Since then, however, Spain, Australia and Poland have passed it.

Also, in August last year it was reported that The country’s bitcoin ATMs were ’empty’ less than a year after their initiation.

Switzerland is the next country on the list after El Salvador. It occupies a relatively distant 7th place, with 155 automobiles installed in the country.

Australia in particular has seen significant growth in the number of these vending machines. and registered a real boom in less than a year and a half. In the first days of this year, 49 ATMs were installed. In December 2022, 33 were added to the total number of ATMs in the country, compared to 31 in November and 35 in October.

During the last four months, the number of ATMs installed has been the highest in the country’s history. Moreover, it was four months in a row, as the chart below clearly shows. A total of 148 ATMs were installed in just four months. This is 64 machines less than the total number of machines installed in El Salvador.


In some 38,611 cryptocurrency ATMs installed worldwide, 94.4% are in North America. According to this website, 86.9% of them are in the United States, and 6.6% in Canada.

Europe is the 3rd house,9% of all cryptocurrency ATMs, while Asia is home to 0.8%. Oceania is with 0.6%, South America with 0.3% and Africa with 0.1%.

Spain is the “European Capital of Crypto ATMs”. It has 0.6% of machines, followed by Poland, Romania and Switzerland, with 0.4% of machines each. The leaders in South America are Colombia and Brazil, with 0.1% of distributors each.

In Africa, South Africa is in first place, with 19 cars, or less than 0.1%. It is followed by the United Arab Emirates, which has three distributors, and Nigeria, which has two.


According to the website, there are 92 fewer ATMs in the world since January 1, 2023. Despite this, there has been a noticeable increase in the adoption of this type of ATM over the past two years and more especially since the beginning of 2021.


According to the same website, Top 10 countries operate 26,177 cryptocurrency ATMs, or 67.8%. The other 589 countries operate 12,434 cryptocurrency ATMs, or 32.2%.
