This November 9, the agitation rises in front of the windows of Excelia’s XL factory, a physical and innovative place open to all (students, teachers, collaborators) whose profession is to introduce transformations to better distribute them in courses. Students of 3e Year of Bachelor Tourism & Hospitality Management are preparing to take their first course there at Metaverse “ Red alert ! », entirely designed by Excelia.
A unique immersive learning experience for students
It was the first for the 3rd graderse Bachelor’s year in Tourism and Hospitality Management. The second session of their course Standards and certifications in the hotel industry was developed equipped with a virtual reality headset and immersed in the universe of the asynchronous Metaverse “ Red alert ! “. At the controls of a luxury hotel complex, they are faced with a serious incident (the drowning of a customer) and must coordinate a crisis response in accordance with the regulations and intervention procedures previously studied in the sequel. Captured by the graphic particularly realistic and immersed in an atmosphere where natural stress reigns in a crisis situation, students have the task of coordinating the intervention, in the skin of the manager. Based on the scenario drawn up by the Excelia teaching team, they are faced with choices. Thanks to virtual reality , they interact with different actors (hotel staff and customers, lifeguards, etc.), move around the hotel complex and face decision-making.A sequence of lessons that has gained great enthusiasm among students.
Pedagogical sequences that complement meaningful face-to-face lessons
The integration of Metaverses into Excelia courses aims to give students experiences that they cannot achieve either in the classroom or in practice. Operational management of a serious crisis is an opportunity they rarely encounter in their learning situations. However, they must be prepared to face them. This is the opportunity that this Metaverse offers” Red alert ! “. Students are introduced to the implementation of an intervention procedure. Thanks to virtual reality, they are in a position of responsibility and develop “ doing “, operational capabilities, such as those covered by “ Red alert :
- Assess the seriousness of an incident to properly trigger an emergency plan (called a Code Rouge/Red Alert),
- Follow the procedure coordination steps “ code red » in accordance with a QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, Environment) management approach,
- Communicate appropriate information to employees under stress,
- Coordinate a post-crisis response commensurate with the severity and consequences of the incident.
An exercise carried out by small groups that is part of a pedagogical progression
Metaverses offered by Excelia enrich the pedagogical palette available to teachers and are part of a pedagogical progress. Performed in groups of 4 to 16 students, the sequence “ Red alert comes after a theoretical course of 21 hours in Standards and certifications in the hotel industry and before a Master Class. The latter aims to make students think about the interest of intervention standards and procedures for a responsible manager.
The added pedagogical value of this exercise is significant. The data collected during the immersive experience allows us to analyze reflexes and mistakes made by students. Thus, the subsequent discussion with them is fueled by factual data and no longer simply by the intuition of our understanding of them until now. An increase in the quality of scientifically evaluated learning
Thanks to virtual reality devices, the long-term memorization of information can be multiplied by two. The first scientific studies show this. The immersive environment allows for an unprecedented student simulation. Their attention is fully captured and the anchoring of knowledge is better. ILE®, the quality standard for immersive educational experiences
To guarantee the quality of the comprehensive experiences offered to its students, Excelia has implemented a very rigorous quality standard. Called ILE® (as in Immersive Learning Experience®), it combines three areas of requirements:

“ Red alert ! » mobilized, for 5 months, 8 employees of Excelia, supported by the technical contributions of a team of employees of the Edtech startup 5Discovery, specialized in the design of 3D/VR trainings.
A co-construction approach is central to Excelia’s objective: to design immersive experiences that provide the right answer in terms of skill development.
An achievement as part of the deployment of the XL Vision digital transformation plan
Inclusive learning, including Metaverses, is at the heart of the digital transformation led by Excelia. It particularly responds to the desire to develop hybrid training, which combines physical and digital. XL Vision aims to reinvent the group’s education system through innovative and immersive pedagogy and improve the experience of each of its stakeholders (students, partners, staff, companies and territories). Holistic and multi-campus, XL Vision is set for 5 years as part of the Excelia 2020-25 strategic plan, which has allocated a budget of 8 million euros.
Implementing this first Metaverse course in Excelia brings a twofold demonstration.
