Facebook launches its Nice Metaverse Academy

Méta, Facebook’s new name, in partnership with Simplon, which specializes in training for digital professions, launched its Nice Metaverse Academy on Friday. This new term refers to the technologies that are supposed to revolutionize the Internet but also our daily lives. Mark Zuckerberg’s social network is convinced anyway.

Key work

The multinational company has decided to bet on these new technologies based on virtual reality. Its vice-president for Southern Europe, Laurent Solly, believes that this revolution will happen “the same size as the advent of mobile internet” and constitutes the reservoir of tomorrow’s professions. That’s why Meta has partnered with Simplon to create a Metaverse Academy. After Paris and Marseille, a branch of this training center will open its doors on Monday, December 5 in the first promotion. Twenty interns ranked not for their degrees, but more for their motivation, points out Véronique Saubot, general manager of Simplon.co. The training, which is completely free, will last nineteen months, four of which are intensive courses and fifteen are company immersions. The objective is “a positive result”that is, with a first job at stake.

But not on Facebook. If this training is “Stamped meta, not for meta”. Nor for partner local authorities. For the mayor, Christian Estrosi, the launch of this academy in Nice, in the heart of the technology park Plaine du Var, is anyway. “an opportunity”. One more chance to be able to respond “For the demands of companies and the needs of communities as well as to contribute to what we want to embody today of youth and modernity by attracting here, where there was nothing ten years ago, the largest research laboratories and the largest companies” .

Metaverse, what is it?

These are virtual universes that allow us to recreate highly immersive experiences that we have in real life. Therefore Metaverse will use the technologies of virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality where we can mix virtual reality and reality… At Meta, we believe that these technologies and these experiences that will be created, like the beginnings of the Internet, will constitute a great new crack of the Internet. Because Metaverse will allow us to have social experiences, training, games, commerce, which we don’t have today just by looking at our smartphone. So it’s really the creation of these universes from these technologies that will allow companies to offer each of us, each employee, a completely new experience.

So it’s not just fun, it’s just games?

The entertainment and gaming industry have often been pioneers in the digital revolution. It is the first technology, which used mobile internet for example. You remember Candy Crush and its success. Today, very large video game companies are already almost Metaverse. Fortnite for example, where you have a virtual identity and play while connected to other players who are not physically near you. In addition, if you use a virtual reality headset, you find yourself completely immersed in the game, so it is a good example of what the Metaverse already is. However, it is not limited to the game.

What are the other apps then?

In recent years, these technologies have been deployed in a multitude of sectors. Health, for example: you have some very good start-ups in France, one in Bordeaux in particular, specializing in heart surgery, able to practically recreate a patient’s heart to allow doctors to study better their disease, train surgeons and prepare complicated problems. medical procedure, even 4000 km from the hospital where the patient is. Even in agriculture: we know that tomorrow the field, the plantations, the rhythm of life of the crops, will be governed by these technologies. Already, Alstom trains 45,000 employees a year in virtual reality. The Hilton Group, for a little less than a year, has been training its cleaners in the codes of the hotel industry in virtual reality… In information, education, culture, tourism or real estate, Metavers represents a breakthrough in scale. of what mobile internet was ten years ago. It was yesterday. Today, almost two-thirds of the world’s internet usage is mobile internet. At Meta we consider that we are in a revolution of the same size and we want to be the leader. Even if it is a five or ten year perspective. But developing these ecosystems requires training. France and Europe have a card to play because they have a lot of talent and these are the big jobs tomorrow.
