Digital: Occitania is making progress on 5G, but is facing fiber difficulties

The ZoneADSL specialist site provides an update on 5G and fiber coverage in Occitania.

Very high speed internet coverage, whether mobile or fiber, is a recurrent issue for many regions because it often conditions economic development or simply everyday life in our increasingly digitized society. This question arises acutely in Occitania, a region that includes mountainous areas and therefore white areas.

Specialized site ADSL areawhich compares internet boxes and mobile plans, has just published a point about the situation in Occitania for the deployment of 5G and that of fiber.

5G: 5th Occitania

As for the deployment of 5G networks, Occitanie is at 5e country at the national level. “Among the 43,816 5G antennas located in France, 4,139 come from the Occitanie region according to ARCEP, i.e. 9% of the 5G antennas available in France. It is in the 5th position in the ranking of regions according to the number of 5G antennas”. ZoneADSL explains. Free, which deploys a dedicated 5G frequency, leads the list with 1,801 antennas in October 2022, followed by Bouygues Telecom (1,012), SFR (751) and Orange (575).

5G status

Geographically, Haute-Garonne is well ahead with 1,194 branches, followed by Hérault (880) and Gard (523). At the bottom of the ranking, we find, with less than 100 branches, Gers (98), Ariège (85), Lot (75) and Lozère (52).

Fibre: strong disparities between departments

In terms of fiber placement, Occitanie is at 6e country at the national level. 75% of homes are eligible for fibre, which still leaves 1 in 4 households deprived of this very high speed. “If the Occitanie region is 6e from the ranking of regions with a fiber coverage rate of 75%, there are some disparities between its departments: only 59% fiber coverage for Gers and Ariège against 83% for Haute-Garonne and 80% for Hérault,” notes ZoneADSL, of which shows that only 67% of accommodations in the region have fiber from the four operators.

Therefore, at the top of the coverage, we find Haute-Garonne (82.9%) followed by Hérault (80.1%) and Tarn-et-Garonne (78.6%). At the bottom of the ranking, we find Tarn (63.2%), Ariège (58.8%) and Gers (58.6%).

Satellite solution

On the occasion of the last congress of the National Association of the Chosen of the Mountains (i am) held at the end of October in Aveyron, Liza Bellulo, president of the French Telecom Federation (FFTelecoms), gave details about operators’ investments in white areas. “For 5 years, the telecom operators have invested, from their own money, the equivalent of 900 colleges every year, that is 90 per department, for the deployment of fixed and mobile networks. The program of white zones in city centers and the objectives of the system of coverage. are unparalleled in the world; only two other countries have set such targets, Germany and Japan, and with much less ambitious targets”.

Since the start of the New Deal program, “nearly 2,000 multi-operator 4G sites have been delivered. Another 1,700 have already been identified by departmental teams and will therefore be delivered in phases over two years. In the mountains, 400 out of 600 the places identified so far are already in service”, said Mr.ME Bellulo.

When areas cannot be covered by fiber or 4G, the use of satellite remains. “In just over a year, satellite Internet has experienced a revolution associated with the arrival of a new satellite which now offers an unlimited Internet connection and up to 100 Mb/s. These performances are worth elsewhere for these solution. qualified for financial assistance from the state to allow the purchase of the connection kit,” explained Anem in March, which has partnered with Eutelsat AND Nordnet.
