King’s Bounty VR in Meta Quest 2 (Preview)

First aired in 2013, the Peaky Blinders series ended last April with its sixth season. Heartbreak for the many fans of this BBC creation, myself included, who will be able to immerse themselves in the unique universe of Birmingham in the 1920s thanks to a virtual reality game where you’ll find the characters and actors .

Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom is a game developed by the studio Maze Theory, to which we owe several Doctor Who games recently including the episode The Edge of Time in VR. For this first game in the gangster universe, the developers will release their title on PC VR, Pico 4 and Meta Quest 2 March 9, 2023. It is also on this last helmet that we had the opportunity to test a demo of the game. You can find this entire demo in our commented video below.

From the first seconds we were very pleasantly surprised by the fact that the whole game will benefita French translation. Menus, objectives, and most of the various documents we encountered in the demo are already there. On the other hand, dialogue translation is currently missing, but we think this will be resolved in the final version of the game via subtitles. Enough to fully appreciate the exchanges between the various characters, including Tommy and Arthur Shelby, who were modeled by their respective actors (Cillian Murphy & Paul Anderson), who also voiced the game.

This presence of the cast of the series for a game in virtual reality is a good indicator of the tools given to the developers to get as close as possible to the universe of Peaky Blinders. Everything else we saw in the demo is of the same ilk. The locations are perfectly familiar and many details contribute to it. In our demo, we were able to discover Garrison Lane leading to the famous Le Garrison pub, as well as Charlie’s Docks. Other emblematic places such as the family headquarters will also be on the program. The fabulous soundtrack of the series should also come to decorate the game, and the emotions felt in the first notes of “Red Right Hand” set the tone.

Regarding the scenario of this Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, it is an original story as you play as an army deserter, arriving in Birmingham under the protection of Peaky Blinders to join the gang. Your mission will be to find Churchill’s “red box” which contains the names and locations of all British agents in the world. All this in the middle of a gang war that will take you to the streets of Birmingham and London. From what we’ve seen, the action should alternate between phases of exchanges and interactions and phases of fairly arcadey gunfights. However, it will be necessary to wait for the game’s release to get a more accurate idea as the demo we had in our hands obviously could not represent the entire appearance of the game in this demo.

We still don’t have any information on the game’s lifespan, but the developers have in any case sought to provide replayability as many objects will be found and collected: tarot cards, packs of cigarettes…

This first demo has in any case assured us about the overall quality of the title, which is not always guaranteed when it comes to a game that holds a large license. This Peaky Blinders VR is definitely fan service and fans of the series will be amazed by the presence of their favorite actors, the modeling of the iconic locations and above all the atmosphere. It remains to be seen if the game will hold us for a few hours without getting too repetitive. In any case, we will continue to follow the game closely and share with you all future information about it.
