EcoRéseau Business – Browse the web with an eco-friendly search engine…

Born in 2008, the search engine Ecogine allows its users twice a year to support the ecological projects that have received the most votes.

According to the Ecological Transition Agency (Ademe), digital would be responsible for 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions. And this share could double by 2025. In an hour, 8 to 10 billion emails are exchanged and 180 million Google searches are performed. Our web search queries go through data centers energy intensive and contribute to carbon pollution. The energy used to transport our request and its response requires an electrical signal that will travel an average of 15,000 km.

It is therefore wise to reduce our carbon footprint when browsing the web. And the first action that should be adopted on a daily basis is the use of ecological search engines. If Google monopolizes more than 90% of this market, other alternative search engines have been launched for ten years to compete with the giants: Google, Bing and Yahoo. They display an eco-responsible character and go further in their civic engagement, donating a portion of their income to ethical projects related to ecology. Thus, we can browse without revealing our private life, plant trees to fight against deforestation or make a donation to humanitarian associations.

Born in 2008, the search engine Ecogine allows its users twice a year to support the ecological projects that have received the most votes. 70% of its advertising revenue will go to associations working for ecological causes. Another original search engine: Ecosia, created in Berlin in 2009, since then it has allowed the planting of more than 162 million trees in more than 35 countries such as Brazil, Burkina Faso or Peru. Fifty requests are enough to plant a tree.

There is nothing intangible about digital

Founded in 2015 by two French engineers, the search engine Lilo also offers a choice of environmental projects. Each request gives the user a drop of water. Small water droplets are what the user collects every time they perform a web search. Since its creation, more than 4.6 million euros have been donated to solidarity projects. Are you interested, one of the latest search engines was born in 2019. This charity engine enables us to transform our searches into good works, thanks to advertising. And this ranges from those towards animals, protecting biodiversity through education in underprivileged countries, research against diseases and many other great causes. It takes 45 questions on the engine to generate 20 euro cents, half of which is donated to projects supported by the site.

Digital, which has become indispensable, is taking over our lives, but there is nothing trivial about it. Its environmental impacts are very real and we need to reduce our carbon footprint and take simple action. During a web search, learn to go for the shortest. Directly type the address of a site, access its browsing history, create favorites in its browser… According to Ademe, direct access to a site via the favorites tab allows for example to divide by 4 the environmental impact compared to a query in a search engine. The same is true if you access a site directly by typing its URL or through its history… Digital technology has a significant impact on the environment. It’s time to rethink our uses in this area, implement solutions, take resolutions to become a responsible digital citizen.
