Mobilization in transport – PCF website

On October 20, communists across Ile-de-France launched a major campaign for quality public transport. During the day, 200 activists distributed and signed the petition. in about 40 stations in 8 departments of the region.

Nothing is going well in Ile-de-France transport: exponential waiting times, overcrowded trains, cascading malfunctions, workers pushed to the limit… Every day, Ile-de-France public transport is collapsing a little more.

This campaign is also a way to explain how the best global urban transport system has reached this critical threshold and to name those responsible for this situation and, above all, the President of the Region since 2016, Valérie Pécresse . It raises the need for solidarity between users and transport agents, but shows that it is possible to act differently to further protect public transport service in a time of climate emergency.

Since 2016, Valérie Pécresse has accelerated the timetable for the privatization process of the transport network. As of January 1, 2025, the entire historic RATP bus network must be privatized. The dismantling has already started with the opening to competition, which is accompanied by a deterioration of the working conditions of the agents, a variable of the financial regulation so that the private subsidiary of RATP wins contracts, the main criterion of which is the price. Thus, from August 1, drivers work 59 minutes more per day without any salary increase. Their employment contracts in public law are transferred to private law. Thousands of agents do not know for whom and under what degraded conditions they will work in a few months. This leads to more and more resignations, which add to the general and unprecedented shortage of shipping agents. For users, this situation translates into fewer buses, subways and trains. This drop in supply is added to the one voted last October by the regional right on the pretext of Covid, when users were already returning to public transport. These accumulated political decisions taken by Valérie Pécresse and voted by the regional and Macronist right plunge transport into a chaotic situation. And while the degradation was experienced, every day, by users, Valérie Pécresse announced a significant increase in prices for next year to fill the financial hole of 750 million euros for the 2023 budget.

The campaign offers alternative proposals.

It is possible to save users’ wallets and finance public transport with an increase in the mobility charge, an increase in the taxation of real estate transactions or the creation of a tax on private jets… This would make it possible to freeze tariffs, to ensure everyone’s right to mobility, especially by making transport free for everyone under 18, but also to ensure the financing of future investments. Everything is a matter of political choice!

It is also possible to stop the privatization of buses. Nothing is binding, not even European directives. Everything is, once again, a matter of political choice. This is also the reason why it is essential that the communist proposals are heard in Parliament.

Therefore, users must be involved. To extend this petition, a series of public meetings with trade unions, user associations, other political forces, etc. will take place in the coming weeks before the Île-de-France Mobilités budget vote on December 7.

The scale of the mobilization could thwart the dire scenario the Liberals have written for transportation. It’s possible ! This is what we will be working on for the next few weeks.
