When it comes to non-fungible tokens, it often comes down to how much they cost. Logical, because that also applies to art and NFTs are considered digital works of art. However, there is also a large part of the NFT world that is not primarily about money. Free NFTs, little warriors, gifts – sometimes they are also worth a lot of money. And yes, again it’s about money.
A good example of one of these NFTs catching on, while initially being given away for free, is Goblintown. They’re ugly, green monsters and you wouldn’t think they could represent so much value, but the crypto world is about to get out of this this week.
Goblintown sounds like a place, but it’s not. It’s a group of all NFT goblins (or, to put it irreverently, goblin images). Every leprechaun has an owner (or is for sale awaiting an owner). The Goblintown community likes to share memes, send each other dirty photos, and most of all, make spelling mistakes, but that’s part of it. It may not seem like a community you want to belong to, but make no mistake: These are all people with at least $16,000 in their pockets.
Yes: a Goblin is worth no less than 16,000 dollars (just under 15,000 euros, or actually: 8.95 ETH, ethereum, a cryptocurrency). Yesterday was half of that, but apparently today is a good day for the kobolds. At least yesterday was not bad either: then a leprechaun was sold for 130,000 euros. Every resident of Goblintown is not like the others. There are also known owners, such as The Sandbox metaverse.
Goblintown is like a rogue community. They are ‘swords’, degenerates, people who lead a different lifestyle and that within NFTs often means that they trade quite risky and have a slight obsession with cryptocurrencies. Crypto that they pay with, for example, the money that was actually destined for their rent, mortgage or study. Many of these swords can be found within Goblintown, which currently has 4,600 unique inhabitants, if we can describe it that way.
a strange club
This NFT series feels like TikTok to many older people. You feel like you’re at a party where you’re wearing the completely wrong clothes, where you can’t follow people, and you don’t get the jokes. And yes, it kind of makes sense that you want to be a part of that in some way. Not just belonging to a group, but also just being able to make chocolate out of whatever’s going on. However, if you will ever succeed with the circus called Goblintown, that is the question.
Very cool, that NFT hit, but what makes Goblintown so special? That is, these NFTs were once free. As a result, many people have obtained such a goblin for free, which they can now sell for large sums of money. A free gift that is worth a lot of money. This happens more often within the NFT world, especially once you belong to a certain community. In fact, the goblins seem to get another free shot tomorrow. Not bad, because in the end now they are giving millions together.
There are a total of 9999 goblins to collect, so we’re not expecting to get rid of the Goblintown community just yet. It is not known who started this initiative. It’s clear, though, that NFTs don’t necessarily have to be of similar designer quality to Louis Vuitton to achieve the same image. Goblins must not be seen and at the same time they must not be dragged. And that for a line that started for free, which is proof to many people that you have to be fast with new, young, fresh NFTs.
At the same time, there are so many NFTs in the world that it’s very rare for one to go as viral as Goblintown this week. But what you can learn from this is that a free NFT certainly doesn’t mean it’s worthless. In addition to the entertainment value (which can certainly be said for this particular collection of NFTs), it can also have a very high cryptocurrency value.
