The Alfa Romeo Tonale debuts as a fully equipped Tonale Edizione Speciale 130PK hybrid version packed with fantastic technical gadgets. But one feature makes the Tonale truly unique.

Before we move on to the fantastic handling of this compact SUV, let’s take a look inside, there we see something unique in the technology. Namely, the nft certificate. The Tonale is the first car in the world with this certificate. What it is? The technology is based on the concept of a blockchain card, a confidential and unalterable record of the key stages in the life of an individual vehicle. This technology certifies the car at the time of purchase. The certificate continues to evolve during the use and subsequent life cycle of the car. Big plus for residual value. It’s actually a combination of NAP data, services, events with the car, and maintenance. All this in one neat app on your phone. Why did Alfa Romeo develop this? Because it eliminates all the paperwork and if you sell the car, you can see at a glance what has happened to the car. Don’t be alarmed, nothing about you is stored personally. If we go deeper into the interior of this masterpiece of the Italian car brand; the Tonale comes standard with an all-new infotainment system, including Android OS, CarPlay, Over-the-Air (OTA) updates and Amazon Alexa integration. Another interesting detail: this SUV can drive autonomously at level 2 with the new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Driver and driving experience, control and emotion are fundamental to Alfa Romeo. So all systems work without interrupting that experience.
Driving assistance systems include Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (IACC), Lane Centering (LC) and Traffic Jam Assist. They ensure automatic speed adjustment, a safe distance from the vehicle in front and that the car stays in the center of the lane. The Tonale also features autonomous emergency braking to warn the driver of an impending collision with automatic braking intervention. If you’re tired or about to fall asleep, Drowsy Driver Detection steps in and lets you know. The Tonale then offers Blind Spot Detection that flags road users in their blind spots, Rear Cross-Path Detection that warns of crossing traffic when backing up, and a 360° camera. Enough to feel safe and comfortable.
The interior of the Tonale is an elegant Italian design. With a minimum number of buttons and a well-organized 22.5-inch TFT touch screen. The seats are adjustable in all directions and the cheeks and backrest can also be adjusted to your own comfort. Personally, I think it’s a shame, because I’m tall, that there is no seat extension. But that does not affect the comfort of the seats.
Alfa Romeo Tonale: handling and appearance
This Tonale is a gem on the road. No understeer, tight cornering, no lean, and FSD shock absorbers underline driving comfort. Personally, I find neutral to be the best ride in the mountains. Direct, but not too much and the suspension is still comfortable. If you drive on straight, flat roads, I choose the D for dynamics. The Integrated Brake System (IBS) and aluminum paddle shifters complete the driving experience. It has good road holding, especially on the wet road surface we drive on. Good grip with this front wheel drive. The Tonale offers two drivetrain solutions: the one I drove and the blazing-fast Plug-in Hybrid e-Q4 four-wheel drive. The choice is yours. The Tonale’s appearance has a typical Alfa Romeo look with a hint of Stelvio at the rear and nice chunky flanks. Little details, like the Italian flag on the mirrors, give you that extra dynamic Alfa feel.
Which version of Tonale will be yours?
The Tonale offers two levels of electrification: hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The Tonale features the 160-hp hybrid VGT engine. Mated to a 7-speed TCT dual-clutch transmission and the P2 electric motor (48 volts, 15 kW and 55 Nm). They ensure that the 1.5-litre petrol engine drives the wheels, even when the combustion engine is switched off. This way you get a true electric driving experience. The transmission allows electrical starting and driving at low speeds. There is also a 130 hp hybrid version with a 7-speed TCT automatic transmission and P2 electric motor.
Then there’s the beefy 275bhp Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 with an acceleration of 6.2 seconds from standstill to 100km/h. This version has a fully electric range of up to 80 kilometers.
