And that was necessary, says CTO Bart Adams. “In recent years there has been a lot of frustration over the shortcomings of existing solutions that visualize traffic data and other trackers. Those tools just don’t work, so you have to work with limited data sets and, for example, only get an overview of one region at a time.”

Naturally, this is what you get in a world where everything and everyone is connected to the Internet of Things (IoT). All those sensors, trackers, and the like provide a lot of data, and then you choke on it. Or not, because as mentioned, xyzt.ai developed a tool that can deal with that tidal wave. How? “Thanks to the cloud,” says Adams. “By doing the calculations there, we can work with that data in a very scalable way.”

The result is an online platform that companies can easily upload and start analyzing data for themselves. “They collect the data themselves or buy it from data-as-a-service companies,” the CTO clarifies. “In maritime transport, for example, it is often radar data, but also AIS (Automatic Identification System) data that the ships themselves transmit. By analyzing and comparing them, you can see, among other things, where there are danger points where ships almost touch, or where there are frequent incidents. That can provide valuable information for a company.”

Of course, xyzt.ai has already worked with the Port of Antwerp, but in addition to the maritime world, the startup also looks at the world cities market. For example, there is already a collaboration with the city of Hamburg. ‘Cities that are working on smart city projects also have a lot of data, for example regarding traffic flows. And this is not only about car traffic, but also pedestrians, electric scooters, … Because our platform is not limited in terms of amount of data, you can apply layer upon layer upon layer, even weather conditions, to compare. what is happening happens at different temperatures.

“We want to grow by focusing very much on one market each quarter,” adds CEO Lida Joly. ‘We will focus on mobility until the summer. We will focus our communication on this, we will be present at the right events and we will also approach the main car manufacturers to establish partnerships on all the data their vehicles collect.” In any case, the start-up looks beyond national borders, because ‘Belgium is too small to implement a solution like ours here alone’.

After several years ear Joly and Adams found several informal investors willing to join them. “We mainly chose people who were not only familiar with our type of product, but also had experience of a successful Belgian start-up,” says Joly. “For example, we ended up with Heidi Rakels and Eric Lafortune (Guardsquare), Thomas Dhollander (Timeseer.ai), and Bruno Lowagie and Ingeborg Willaert (iText).”

Combined with a convertible loan from PMV and a VLAJO project grant, xyzt.ai was able to start with a capital of one million euros. ‘Once we are stronger, we will definitely need additional funds for our growth. Therefore, we anticipate raising €2 million in venture capital sometime in 2023.”
