Epic and LEGO announced yesterday that there will be a metaverse of the two brands together. Epic is inextricably linked to Fortnite, a game that is already very popular with children. Now comes with a LEGO themed metaverse for kids. There are more reasons to get excited about this, even if we don’t know exactly what to expect.
fortnite x lego
On the one hand, we do know: if you imagine a kind of Fortnite built from LEGO, in which you can make your own avatar in the form of a minifigure, then you are probably not too far from what this Epic-LEGO is. metaverse will become. Exactly what the plans are is not yet known, so it remains conjecture.
It’s also exciting for LEGO, because it’s used to another studio making the games out of plastic blocks. That’s been the same studio for decades: the UK’s TT Games. It’s true: LEGO games are also very similar in terms of gameplay, mainly distinguished by the various major franchises that LEGO can connect to them, such as Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Marvel. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga recently appeared, a game that had already been postponed several times.
So the hunger for LEGO games is still great and it’s no wonder Epic wants to be a part of that too. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said, “We’re very excited to collaborate and build a space within the metaverse that’s fun, entertaining, and special for kids and families.” Therefore, it is especially intended for this metaverse to become very suitable for families. “The LEGO Group and Epic Games are bringing together their vast experience to ensure that this new form of the internet has been built from the ground up with the well-being of children in mind.”
What companies do have to keep in mind is that their metaverse does not resemble games like Minecraft and Roblox, in which you are also in large open worlds and where building blocks are also used. You can also build separate worlds into this, which of course is entirely the intention with a metaverse. Now Minecraft and Roblox are very aware of how to do this in a good way, which is very kid friendly, so in a way Epic and LEGO can just ignore that. If the visual style is significantly different, because if you see LEGO figures in front of you with a style similar to Fortnite, you will quickly end up with a kind of Roblox.
A metaverse for children.
But yes, you will just fill in a lot of things yourself if little information is available. It is not even known on which platform it will appear, when, etc. It is obvious that at this early stage, companies mainly want to make it clear that it must be safe for children. They want to do this based on three pillars: protecting the right to play by making safety and well-being a priority, protecting children’s privacy by putting their interests first, and giving children and parents the tools to have the control over your digital experience
These are all important matters, but still many people are not happy with the plan that there should now be a metaverse for children as well. Many people see it as a new vehicle for Meta to show even more ads and earn money. However, that is not entirely correct: Roblox is already a metaverse in principle, and that is a game that many children also play.
Therefore, Epic and LEGO are expected to present a colorful world full of well-known LEGO humor and places where people can play together in a safe and fun way. It’s a risky business, because where there are children, there are unfortunately also people who are less interested in children, so Epic and LEGO have to come up with a good plan to ensure that safety. In any case, we don’t care much about building the world: both companies have long proven themselves to be extremely creative and skillful.
