Are you ready for a new iPhone? Then it is very likely that you are looking for the popular iPhone SE. In this article we compare the old and new versions. iPhone SE 2022 vs. iPhone SE 2020: what are the most striking differences?
iPhone SE 2022 vs. iPhone SE 2020
Want a new iPhone, but don’t care much about the latest technology? So the iPhone SE is an interesting phone. Doesn’t look too modern on the outside, but inside it’s completely up to date.
In this article, we are going to compare iPhone SE 2022 and iPhone SE 2020. In this way, you will know what the differences are and what exactly Apple changed about the popular entry-level iPhone, and what not.
Both the iPhone SE 2022 and the 2020 version have a 4.7-inch screen. Still, this isn’t the smallest iPhone Apple sells. Although the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini have a larger screen (5.4 inches), they are still more compact. This is because the Touch ID home button is missing.
- iPhone SE 2020 size: 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 millimeters
- iPhone SE 2022 size: 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 millimeters
In terms of format and screen size, the devices are identical to each other. That also applies to the resolution: 1334 x 750 pixels, with 326 pixels per inch. However, the iPhone SE 2022 at 144 grams is slightly lighter than the iPhone SE 2020 which weighs 148 grams. However, this difference is hardly noticeable.
If you put the iPhone SE 2022 and iPhone SE 2020 side by side, you probably won’t see any difference. Once again, the device has been given a classic look and the SE also looks like two drops on the iPhone 8 from 2017.
On the left the iPhone SE 2020, on the right the iPhone SE 2022
At the bottom is still the familiar fingerprint scanner for Touch ID. You still unlock with your fingerprint instead of Face ID. Apple didn’t change the design at all? Yes, the back has stronger glass than before.
The colors of the iPhone SE 2022 are also practically the same: you can choose between white, black and red. The first two look slightly different than the previous ones and have been renamed Starlight and Midnight.
First iPhone SE with 5G
The iPhone SE 2022 is the first SE with 5G support; the 2020 version does not have this. With 5G, the mobile Internet becomes faster and, above all, more stable, as long as you have a suitable subscription.
Conveniently, the iPhone SE only switches to 5G when needed. In less demanding conditions, it falls back to 4G, because that has less of an impact on the battery. By the way, the iPhone SE 2022 does not support mmWave, the faster version of 5G. It is limited to sub-6 GHz, just like the Dutch and Belgian iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models.
iPhone SE 2022 vs. iPhone SE 2020: camera
As for the camera, the differences between the iPhone SE 2022 and the iPhone SE 2020 are small. On the back, they have a 12-megapixel camera with an aperture of ƒ/1.8. The selfie camera is also similar: both take 7-megapixel photos, with an aperture of ƒ/1.8.
Still, the quality of photos with the iPhone SE 2022 is better than its predecessor. This is thanks to the new A15 Bionic chip. That makes the new SE a bit smarter, as it has advanced camera features. Smart HDR 4 for example, which improves exposure. And so-called ‘Deep Fusion’ uses advanced machine learning to analyze and enhance images pixel by pixel.
However, the differences between the photos are subtle. If you want an iPhone with a really good camera, you’ll have more fun with iPhone 11 and later. Not only do they have more lenses on the back, but they also support Night mode.
The iPhone SE 2022 does not have a larger battery than the iPhone SE 2020. However, the battery lasts longer, thanks to the efficient A15 Bionic chip. Apple claims that the new iPhone SE lasts up to two hours longer during video playback. The SE can now do that for fifteen hours straight: with the 2020 version, that’s about thirteen hours.
Upon launch, the 2020 iPhone SE had an entry price of 489 euros. That has now become higher, because the iPhone SE costs 529 euros. If you want more storage than 64GB, you also pay more. These are the prices of the iPhone SE 2022:
- iPhone SE 2022 (64GB): 529 euros
- iPhone SE 2022 (128 GB): 579 euros
- iPhone SE 2022 (256GB): 699 euros
Choose the iPhone SE 2022 or the iPhone SE 2020?
Are you sure you want an iPhone SE, but not sure between the 2022 or 2020 version? We recommend you always bet on the iPhone SE 2022, even if the differences are small.
The price difference is also not too big. At the time of writing, the 2020 iPhone SE is at most a few dozen cheaper. By spending those few extra dollars, you get a more future-proof iPhone. It not only has 5G support, but also a newer chip that provides the iPhone with software updates for another two years.
The iPhone SE 2022 can be reserved from March 11. A week later it is in the stores and the first orders are delivered.
