International Women’s Day is March 8 and attention is also paid to it here in Tilburg. The Feniks Emancipation Expertise Center Tilburg Foundation is organizing a celebration on this day for the 45th time, this time at the De Nieuwe Vorst Theater. The festive program includes performance and electoral debate† And: you can be there!
On International Women’s Day, we reflect on all that has been achieved and what remains to be done for women’s rights and gender equality. As an organization committed to women in Tilburg, Feniks pays particular attention to this. “We are very optimistic in the Netherlands about the emancipation of women,” says Gerda de Vries, director of Feniks. “But there’s still a lot to do. This was recently revealed by the revelations surrounding The Voice. That is the tip of the iceberg. Sexual harassment and violence against women is a major problem. In our country a woman is murdered every eight days, many times by her former or current partner. Continuous attention to the emancipation of women is necessary”.
International Women’s Day in Tilburg
International Women’s Day has as its national theme this year: F/M Solidarity. According to Laurens Kleijntjens, project leader for the emancipation of men at Feniks, this is an excellent opportunity for men to show themselves on March 8 in celebration of Women’s Day. “The emancipation of women and men go hand in hand. Only together can we achieve gender equality and a better world for all.” Laurens mentions Tilburg’s campaign against street bullying, which he is working on on behalf of Feniks. “We call on men to confront each other about offending behavior.”
The women most affected by the coronavirus crisis
According to Laurens, another example is the coronavirus crisis, which has hit women the hardest around the world. “Initially there was hope that men would do more unpaid care, now that they work mostly from home. Unfortunately, nothing turned out to be less true. Mothers who worked from home had a disproportionately heavy workload, dealing primarily with children, homeschooling, and housework. So you see how traditional we still are when it comes to gender stereotypes and the division of roles between men and women.”
